Does Invisalign Work On Very Crooked Teeth?

Alexandria, VA Cosmetic OrthodontistInvisalign has become one of the most popular alternatives to traditional braces, and it's easy to see why. The clear aligners are discreet, removable, and generally more comfortable than metal brackets and wires. If your teeth only need a little correction, it’s an easy choice to make. However, if your teeth are significantly misaligned, you may wonder if Invisalign is still an option for you. The Kingstown cosmetic dentists at Alexandria Dental Art can explain the best use cases for Invisalign versus traditional braces.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners to gradually shift your teeth into a better position. Small cement dots may be placed on certain teeth for the aligners to snap onto to help them get sufficient leverage to move your teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for about one to two weeks before you move on to the next set in the series. The aligners apply gentle, consistent pressure that guides your teeth into their new positions over time.

Your treatment is mapped out using 3D imaging software, which lets your provider preview the movement of your teeth from start to finish before you even put in your first aligner. The total number of aligners – and therefore the length of treatment – depends on how much correction your teeth need.

Does Invisalign Work on Severely Crowded or Crooked Teeth?

Whether Invisalign will work on severely crowded or crooked teeth depends on the type and degree of misalignment. Invisalign has come a long way since it first hit the market in the late 90s, and it can now treat a much wider range of cases than it once could. These days, Invisalign is generally effective for:

  • Mild to moderate crowding or spacing issues

  • Overbites, underbites, and crossbites of moderate severity

  • Open bites

  • Gaps between teeth

Very severe crowding, significant jaw misalignment, or certain bite problems may be beyond what aligners alone can fix. In some cases, Invisalign can still be part of the solution, but paired with other treatments like rubber bands, tooth extractions, or even jaw surgery. In complex cases, traditional braces or other orthodontic appliances may do the job more efficiently.

What Options Are There if Invisalign Won’t Work on Your Teeth?

If Invisalign isn't the right fit for your case, there are a number of other viable options.

Traditional Braces

Metal or ceramic braces give your orthodontist more control over complex tooth movements. These are often the best option for severe crowding or significant bite correction. According to a study from the National Library of Medicine, "...if teeth need to be moved extensively in multiple directions, CAT [Clear Aligner Therapy] is likely not going to be strong enough."

Combination Treatment

Some patients start with braces to handle the heavy lifting and finish with Invisalign for fine-tuning. This is a good way to reduce the total time needed with the bulkier, less comfortable braces.

Surgical Options

In cases where the jaw itself is the root of the problem, orthognathic (jaw) surgery may be recommended alongside orthodontic treatment. This is relatively rare and typically reserved for skeletal issues that can't be corrected with aligners or braces alone. Surgery is invasive and often requires significant downtime for recovery. If a jaw must be immobilized post-op, the patient may have to go through physical therapy afterward to restore the normal range of motion and function.

The only way to know for sure which category you fall into in 2026 is to have a provider examine your teeth, take X-rays, and assess your bite. Don't count yourself out of Invisalign because you’re worried that your teeth are too misaligned. Talk to an experienced orthodontist about what option would be best for your case.
